On NWN2 and LOTRO :: Now in the Past

July 31, 2007 · Leave a Comment

Just a quick note to say that it has been a good long time since I’ve touched either. NWN2 has been gone now for quite sometime and outside of checking on Adam Miller’s work with Dark Waters, I simply don’t check in.

With respect to LOTRO, it was good fun but I was at a point where the progression through the game was slowing a bit and there was simply so big of a world, that I felt like it was going to be long journey. With Pirates of the Burning Sea on the horizon and the great guild growing in anticipation, I made a conscious decision to play mainly solo without the context of an online guild. I think that made it easier to let go.

Ironically, I left for vacation and upon my return, my account was expired. Even though the money simply isn’t an issue, I still consider my purchases and I’ve continued to put it off to this day. It is somewhat surprising to me that these prescription games continue to pull people along with the expense they build up. Granted it is cheaper than going and buying new games, but with all the complaining on boards about pricing, I’m surprised this model is so well accepted.

So all in all, I am waiting for POTBS. Dragon Age seems miles away. Mass Effect rolls out in October and Jade Empire occasionally finds its way into the kids Xbox360 for those occasional lull moments.

If I’m missing something great, let me know.

Vacation is Over, but Blog Makes Noise

June 14, 2007 · Leave a Comment

On a day where I have little to say except that I am back from a great trip, I noticed this link:

Bestest, Most Fastest Growing Blogs

Ok…. I made up the “bestest” part and you do have to go down to the bottom of the page, but it seems legitimate unless someone has pulled a fast one on me and with over a million blogs on WordPress making any list is worth noting.

Anyway, I’m back and I thoroughly enjoyed the time spend with family far away from the realities of work. I’ve been back for a few days but I’ve been overly busy trying to catch up on the real-life side of things and so there hasn’t been much to say here.

That said, I needed to drop by and post something to get the site moving forward again. So I’ll leave a photo or two from the trip.

Enjoy the day!

The Glory of a 22 inch LCD!

May 23, 2007 · Leave a Comment

Monday, I ran out and purchased a new LCD monitor. The goal was to purchase a new monitor and allow me to rotate a 17 inch 4:3 LCD home for the kid’s computer and put the old CRT into a closet to slowly die. I wasn’t quite sure whether the monitor would go at work or replace the 20 inch widescreen Dell Ultrasharp that I have had at home for probably 2 years now.

For the first time in a long time, I spontaneously purchased something. With very little research, I pretty much walked into Best Buy and took a look at the monitors and picked one. I tried to pick the one with a very good picture that was pretty cheap. :) I had walked through some store a couple of months ago and thought that 22 inch LCDs were the best cost point and from there, I went simply on appearance in the store and wound up with MAG Innovision 22 inch LCD for around $240. The stats on the card seemed really pretty good and so with little thought, I made the leap.

Later that night I hooked it up to my computer at home. I didn’t install drivers or anything like that. Simply unplugged the Dell and hooked up the Mag. Not a ton of difference honestly. A little bigger but the colors seemed a bit off. So I spent a couple of hours fiddling with the monitor settings and the settings on the video card. I think the picture got to be pretty darn close to the Dell but I’m not certain it ever matched up with respect to subtle colors and text.

What I did notice is the base font size is larger and, in general, a little more pleasing to me. Again, I did no research, just thought the price vs. screen size was a good deal and a quick purchase. Now that I own both and have read a little something – here is a little rundown. Both run on 1680×1050 pixels so you do NOT get any more screen real estate with the step up in size. What you do get is bigger font at that resolution.

After figuring that out, I went back and re-connected the Dell to the home computer and packed up the MAG to bring to work where I do the vast majority of my reading. So this morning, I unpacked the cables and hooked the thing up and hoped that my old system would run the monitor. First thing I noticed is that MAG does NOT include a DVI cable. I had used my Dell cable at home and so I was forced to hook it up analog style. Already, I was a little depressed after having it be demoted from home and now demoted from digital. “Perhaps I should not get in the habit of running out and spontaneously purchasing junk”, I momentarily thought to myself.

But after plugging the thing in and upping the resolution on the ATI Radeon 9800 Pro, it is a MASSIVE step up from the 17 inch LCD. The real estate available for work is great and the text is crystal clear here. I’m really not sure what changed. At home, looking at the default settings and even after tweaking for a couple of hours, I wasn’t real pleased with the monitor. But here, under the florescence lights, it blows away the ViewSonic LCD that has sat here for the last 2 years. I’m doubtful that I’ll ever even hook up the digital cable – Why? It looks great so why mess with it. Plus the majority of my work is text based here so I can’t see any need for changing.

One word of warning. If you play games, make sure you have a computer and graphics card that can push all those pixels around. If you’re not running games, you can get away with hooking up a big monitor with little risk but with games, you can quickly run yourself out of your hardware.

In the last 2 days, I read a lot of reviews saying the 22 inch is the sweet-spot in the market with nice advantages like size and font readability that make it look like a winner for the next several years. I think I agree!

The Party Tree: A Good Thing Gone Bad?

May 17, 2007 · 3 Comments

A role-playing storyline taken from an event run on the Windfola server for Lord of the Rings Online. For context on the event, please see the following two links:

The Party Announcement

Dermid, Spider-Sting Journal Entry: The Night Before

What follows below is an account of the event through the Eyes of Dermid of the Harfoots now living near Scary; Second cousin of Dermid, Spider-Sting. Throughout the account, he is openly shaken but has attempted, the best he can, to recall the events of the evening.

First things first, be reminded that I’m Dermid of the Harfoots and not Dermid, Spider-Sting. I’m a cousin of the hobbit and a good friend. I’m a farmer from near Scary and Spider-Sting is my 2nd cousin on my fathers side. You see, Spider-Sting recently decided to throw a party and invited several folks to meet at the party tree and it having been several good years since I traveled anywhere near that side of the Shire, I made the long trip.

The day seemed to began pleasantly enough. I showed up quite early and spent a good half-day cleaning tables and baking pies in the nearby ovens. I knew I’d have to help and didn’t expect Spider-Sting to arrive until near the start of the party so this wasn’t unexpected.

Dermid Rests After a Long Day’s Work

A good handful of visitors arrived during the early moments of the gathering. I really think that Spider-Sting would have been most pleased. People from the “Lone-Lands” to other short people, dwarves I believe they are called from the cold mountains, all within the Shire. It was a pleasant sight and one I wished I could of enjoyed. Some danced, a few enjoyed a good smoke, and I think most, if not all, partook in the pies.

A Group Gathers at the Party Tree!

Adventurers from Across the Land are Seen Within the Shire

As the time rolled past, it became increasingly obvious to this hobbit that something bad was afoot. Spider-Sting is not one to be early, but not one to be late; especially at his own event. I remember nervously waiting with the others, trying to keep up a decent mood. From standing upon tables for a better view, to trying to see if pipeweed might ease the nerves, little to nothing seemed to settle the knot quickly forming within my belly.

It was nearly a quarter past before I broke down. I’m quite saddened, now in looking back, that I didn’t give into my gut a bit earlier. It pains me to no end that I could have altered fate. *A tear comes into his eyes. After pausing for a moment to gather himself, he paints a rather timid smile on his face and continues to recount his memories of the event.*

The time had come for action so I took to the stage and made, for me at least, a bold step. I announced my fear that Spider-Sting was in trouble. It was the reason for my nervousness, for which I apologized, and I supplied his final journal entry as proof of my concern. I know that hobbits can be a little paranoid at times and even I myself only rarely leave Scary but something within me knew that all was not well.

Questions ensued and I attempted to remember all that I could from the conversations I had had with Spider-Sting. I remembered talk of bandits or thieves or something… as well as a waterfall and or a camp. Details slipped as I’ve never cared much for adventure and Spider-Sting can often ramble. After sharing my memories, several within the group apparently thought he went South into a camp of brigands in search of greater treasure. Sadly this made all too much sense. He is a pleaser and was clearly nervous about the event and wanted “grand prizes” for whatever simple contests might evolve during the festivities.

Thankfully I had brought the fireworks for the party. A member of the crowd had a wonderful idea to use them as flares; I hate to admit that I have forgotten who it was by name but much of the last is somewhat of a blur. I handed each of the leaders of the 3 groups a firework to use when they or if they found Dermid, Spider-Sting. You see, they’d rise high above the Shire and be a clear signal for all, much faster than the mail system in the Shire which always seems to be in a state of chaos.

There and then, I think I must have fainted at the base of the tree. I remember little else until I awoke within the The Ivy Bush Inn some several hours later with my cousin lying next to me.

Fainting Cousin

Within the inn, I was told it was as I had feared. Dermid, Spider-Sting had gone into a camp of thieves alone in search of prizes for those who might attend. He carried a small pouch labeled “Prizes” that carried several hand-crafted pieces of jewelery that, at least to this hobbit, seemed quite enough and then some. But he’s always one to go a step beyond and so I guess it is not surprising.

Brigands!

*Moves over to Spider-Sting, still barely clinging to life, and places a hand on his chest.* I can only imagine what you have seen and what you might have been through. *Dermid of the Harfoots lies down next to his cousin and slips into a more peaceful rest now that this tale is told.*
